‘Melancholy (Chain)’ delivers personal insight, nostalgia and youthful fun ahead of their new album coming 25th September.
cowboyy have certainly enticed us in for their new, heavier, more unprecedented route of their upcoming release ‘revocder‘ via Big Scary Monsters. Their new single ‘Melancholy (Chain)’ epitomises this seemingly chaotic turn, where the track details a journey into perhaps a more personal insight into their astounding creative prowess. Whilst maintaining a nail-biting distance, you can easily be captured in and involved with no way of expecting where the song will finish.
The backings of an alarm-like sound sings out like a warning, with hidden undertones of nostalgic fun. As a heavily nostalgic person, this unexplainable sounds reminded me of arcade games and audible collections of youthful fun, layered and almost drowned out by the torment of these fantastic heavy instrumentals. All build together to emulate a sense of uncertainty which seem to go on forever to create an epic head-banger until the final nail-biting crescendo finish. The band have previously stated their love for “big stupid guitar solos” which truly carries the grandeur of this track, accompanied with the addictive gritty vocals and catchphrases that lure you in and make this track memorable. A sense of pleading statements of ‘I know I’m not okay’ are what fits the melancholic persona the title assumes. Here, Powell almost embodies a feeling of something darker- unknown, yet sounds understandable and relatable for every listener.
The instrumentals float between broken sounds and perfectly crafted anguish. A true soundtrack to bring to life their uncategorised sound. Both with a fun, new edge that their new release will bring to life on a deeper level. The segmented vocals reminiscent to an early 2000s pop-punk bands with the textured math rock drums, this cocktail of genre is truly addictive. ‘Melancholy (Chain)’ reigns true their refusal to be categorised by a single genre, with a sound so hauntingly refreshing. By finishing on the drawn-out almost cathartic crescendo of instrumentals, cowboyy are inviting us in to hear more, and setting the stone that there is more to uncover in their release on the 25th of September.
