Chicago’s Horsegirl return with the release of their new single ‘Switch Over’, the third track from their upcoming album ‘Phonetics On and On‘
In comparison to the trio’s previously released singles, the sentimental ‘2468’ and the jagged basslines of ‘Julie’, ‘Switch Over’ ambles along with a confident, and well judged, simplicity. The track’s jangling guitars and swirling backing vocals create a satisfying and rewarding sonic landscape for the listener to dive into, bathed in a warmth of familiarity on each listen.
Bandmates Nora Cheng and Penelope Lowenstein alternate vocals throughout the track, lyrics threaded nonchalantly and effortlessly between the two. Their vocals melt like butter over the mix, dancing back and forth like a choreographed routine.
The track’s relatively simple melody and lyrics add to the tenderness of the release, creating an authenticity between band and listener. Whilst in short supply, each lyric is honest and pertinent, delivering a youthful naivety to the band’s sound.
‘Switch Over’ is an ode to simplicity, its gorgeous arrangement perfectly judged to create a homely tribute to the ordinary. The track feels nostalgic, yet fresh, and propels Horsegirl towards a successful sophomore release.
‘Phonetics On and On’ is out on 14th February via Matador Records.
