Belfast band Makeshift Art Bar take us on a journey through noise, punk and metal on new track ‘Bedwetter’

‘Bedwetter‘ by Makeshift Art Bar is a song you first heard in a dream, something unpredictable but familiar. The noise rock trio pitch into and lurch through this lively song, a Frankenstein’s monster of post-punk, grunge and––low-key––sludge metal. All sung with an unmistakable Belfast accent.

What sets ‘Bedwetter‘ apart is its dynamism. The track doesn’t follow a predictable structure; instead, it pitches and rolls, dragging you into its discordance and strange rhythms. It’s a song of juxtaposition—low, searing moments are met by explosive crescendos. The song is full of volatile energy and that’s exactly what we’re here for.

After two and half minutes of post-punk we move suddenly into sludge and grunge, with Makeshift Art Bar sounding more like the Butthole Surfers or a demented RED FANG record than the likes of Chalk. And then the noise returns, which in this new context feels pretty damn danceable.

‘Bedwetter‘ is the second offering from Makeshift Art Bar’s debut EP, ‘Lacklustre Writing Makes Fundamental Reading‘. Their music doesn’t sit neatly in any one genre, it’s rough edges and multiple influences make for a surprising first listen. Belfast seems to love this kind of raw and unrelenting. And I can’t lie, I love it too. ‘Bedwetter‘ is a song that’s really grown on me since I first listened to it.

If ‘Bedwetter‘ is any indication, Makeshift Art Bar are piecing together something thrillingly unsteady. The sharp but exacting edges of their music wear a plethora of shifting influences. Makeshift Art Bar aren’t interested in easy categories—they’re building a messy (in all the right ways) and vital sound.
