Moving cities, changing jobs, learning new road names. My life that I held so close to me in Cardiff is now nothing but a distant, soft-focus memory I come back to when I’ve got too much time and a long train ride ahead of me (like right now, except I’m writing a review on a song this time… see? Everything is different!).
I say this because the video that accompanies Penelope Isles’s newest release, ‘I Loved You, Robert Pattinson’, feels exactly like one of those journeys. This stunning release from Brighton-by-way-of-Isle-of-Man dream-pop champions Penelope Isles just gets nostalgia in a way that only my journal ever has when I think about being 22 a bit too much. For the uninitiated, the band is centred around the sibling partnership of Lily and Jack Wolter, who have spent the last few years carving out a reputation for making indie music that feels like a warm, fuzzy memory wrapped in bittersweet nostalgia. Like I said, they do it and they do it well.
Feeling like the waves that crashed the shore gently in the music video, ‘I Loved You, Robert Pattinson’ is a shimmery track that reflects back to you all that you need, whatever that may be. Drums crash below the pretty harmonies that flow through my headphones. This song is truly one I will be playing on a loop for a long time.
The song feels iridescent in a way that the sun hits waves on a shore and everything shimmers and sparkles. Everything about this track speaks to me in a way music hasn’t in a while. Reminding me of the likes of Phoebe Bridgers and Martin Luke Brown, honesty almost always comes with a price nowadays, but it doesn’t feel like that with Penelope Isles.
Recorded live at Black Bay Studios on the rugged, wind-swept island edge of the Isle of Lewis in Scotland, the track carries that exact feeling of being isolated at the end of the world while looking back at your own history. It makes sense that it sounds this way. After a brief period of drifting apart into solo projects and with guitarist Jack Wolter out on the road touring with CMAT—the Wolter siblings resurfaced to write these songs during a month-long surf trip in Lagos, Portugal.
Ultimately, this single is a triumphant reminder of why Penelope Isles are so easy to fall in love with and I truly can’t wait to hear what ‘3‘ has in store for us. It’s a track for those quiet transitions and the moments where you have to look back in order to move forward. As the final notes fade out like the waves I talked to you about earlier, I’m left with a comforting sense of clarity. We might not have all of the answers we are constantly looking for and we might not even know where we are going yet, but with tracks as wonderful as this one; the uncertainty doesn’t feel quite so daunting.
