Unapologetic indie duo Prima Queen release new single ‘Oats (Ain’t Gonna Beg)‘ ahead of debut album ‘The Prize,’ out on 25th April
After having journeyed the UK last December with Everything Everything, Prima Queen have continued to embody their quirky pop-rock sound and assertive lyrics in their latest single ‘Oats (Ain’t Gonna Beg)‘ – a song curtained in bouncing basslines and extravagant guitar riffs, layered upon a distinct message of self-assurance and preservation.
The vehement subversion of gender-expectations in regards to what is expected of a woman during dating and romance is a clear definer of this song. Many female-led pop songs detailing the dating experience seem to establish an acceptability when it comes to losing yourself in a relationship in exchange for the pining and validation from someone else. However. ‘Oats‘ declares an allowance of love and desire, just simply not at the hands of “begging” – creating a sense of empowerment which is only amplified by the uplifting and positive musicality of this song.
The dynamic friendship of frontwomen Louise Macphail and Kristen McFadden is manifested beautifully in this track, with the complimentary combination of an outburst of optimistic pop instrumentation in the chorus (reiterating the confident hook “I ain’t gonna beg for your love”) and the distinct audacious bassline.
Macphail’s solo guitar towards the final position of this song is an adventurous – and perfectly executed – symbol of the evoking feeling of finding love and celebration outside of the affirmation of a significant other, be that with your friends, your work, or yourself.
Debut album ‘The Prize’ is out on 25th April via Submarine Cat Records.
