Drummer first and foremost, but will happily give an opinion on anything rock, indie and punk related.

The Strokes top off a crazy week with the release of their newest single ‘Going Shopping’ and announce new album for release on June 26th.

It’s safe to say its been a rather hectic week for fans of New York indie royalty. The Strokes began with cryptic announcements of new music, the band then followed up with an early live performance of a new single in San Francisco, before a grand announcement of a new album, entitled ‘Reality Awaits‘, due for release on June 26th via Cult Records/RCA Records. Their new single, released on April 7th, ‘Going Shopping’, boldly retains the bands classic sound, with production from Rick Rubin.

The Strokes are fairly good at repackaging their classic melodies in a new makeover, and this tune is a further example of that. It is not too dissimilar to previous Strokes‘ tracks, such as ‘Threat of Joy, released 10 years ago on a standalone EP ‘Future Present Past’.

For me, the most intriguing area of this song is the lyrical content. Julian Casablancas has explored political themes in his music for many years via The Strokes and The Voidz, albeit in a rather sleek and understated manner. On this track, he rambles in his typical cool fashion about his feelings on returning to music, claiming the band has been ‘expanding on their greatness’, and ‘building future ruins’. These tongue in cheek lines are accompanied with a sprinkling of anti-capitalist rhetoric, which does make me chuckle, as Jules is the son of the inventor of the supermodel… Oh well, I suppose that isn’t his fault necessarily. Regardless, the lyrical content on this track is probably my favourite part, apart from the excellent shimmery guitars and surprisingly adventurous drumming on display too.

Regardless, all indie lovers of the world shall rejoice in the warm embrace of an impending Strokes project for the time being. I am personally very excited, as they very rarely, if ever, make a complete hash of it. In the meantime, give this tune a listen, especially whilst the sun is out!
