‘No Driver’ gives listeners a taste of what’s to come on the NYC duo’s upcoming seventh album ‘Roses’, releasing June 5th.

Put simply, ‘No Driver’ is a reminder of why Widowspeak should always be included in discussions around bands at the forefront of dreampop. Not only have the NYC duo been consistent in crafting breezy, and sometimes haunting, landscapes, but they have also been meticulous in the way they have honed their sound in their over sixteen-year career. Whether it’s a thrumming turnaround of droning guitar notes or the wispy closeness of Molly Hamilton’s vocals, against slow and tapered percussion, fans can recognise the band’s sonic textures in a genre which is happily crowded right now.

Listeners are introduced to ‘No Driver’ by way of a climbing short guitar solo that positions the song in an isolated setting. There’s a gentle piano progression throughout that pushes the track forward and increases in prominence as the song progresses, bleeding into an Americana soundscape.

As the track builds, there’s a certain surrendering quality to ‘No Driver’ that prompts the listener to do one of two things. One is to drift around and go about their day, as if levitating a few feet off the ground. The other is to zoom out and recognise when others are on autopilot and give them time to come back to themselves, depicted in the music video for ‘No Driver’ with Jesus taking the wheel of a car for a large portion of the production.

Hamilton says the track “is about knowing and loving people who seem to thrive being on autopilot, at least for a while. It’s written from the perspective of trying to be supportive and knowing it can be kind of magic when you’re in it, but also just waiting patiently for whenever they’re ready to move on from destructive behaviour.”

No Driver’ has been released with Widowspeak’s other new track ‘If You Change’ ahead of the band’s seventh album ‘Roses’, releasing on June 5th.
