If you have kept up to date with our social media channels you would have seen that we have relocated to Falmouth, the bustling university town in Cornwall. One of the main reasons for making the move southward was for it’s blossoming music scene, we were not left disappointed from our first sample of what is on offer.
The student pub based at the top of the town’s famous Jacob’s Ladder, a set of stairs similar to Cirith Ungol (yes that is a lord of the rings reference) played host to a variety of talents and sounds.
Kicking things off was the Falmouth based Luke Moss, a dizzying wave of post-punk that is surrounded in emotion. Luke Moss provides a variety if infectious riffs, thumping percussion and deeply personalised lyrical content. It’s great to hear someone be so brutally honest and open about their own struggles, yet remain intact on stage.
Following this was the hotly anticipated The Petties, a Bristol based four piece that are experts in creating angst filled indie-punk. Their performance at Jacobs Ladder was nothing short of impressive, to watch a young band be so comfortable was great. It was a visceral experience that was oozing in unrelenting energy. It could be argued that The Petties are one of the most exciting live bands around at the moment, there is a long bright road ahead of these likely lads.
Closing the night off was the sludgy tones of Earth Tongue, a gruesome twosome that harnesses some of the meatiest riffs I have ever heard. In fact it was amazing that they managed to make so much noise, their set was an eclectic barrage of heavy, stoner rock riffs backed by the occasional howl. Their sound carried a similar tone to the likes of Fuzz, Wooden Shjips and Truckfighters. It’s big riffs, heavy percussion and hypnotic tones and all of this was present live.
This night provided us with a fantastic introduction into what is on offer in Falmouth and has us excited to bring you future coverage from events in Falmouth. We also want to extend a massive shoutout to Red Van Records and Acid Cat for putting on this night and Jacobs Ladder for supporting live music.
