Philadelphia, USA based artist Fonvery talks us through his latest single ‘Did You Want Me To Love You?’, dream collabs, and more
Fonvery offers a simple, fun, an infectious take on the indie/slacker rock genre. It’s draped in lo-fi goodness and reverb drenched vocals, all of the quality hallmarks of the genre. His latest single ‘Did You Want Me To Love You?’ is an exemplary example of the genre and his own sound.
After indulging in his latest single we wanted to know more about Fonvery‘s music, influences, and more. Thankfully, he was happy to chat with us!
Kieran: Hey! Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! How have you been?
Francis: Thanks for the opportunity! I’m happy I have another outlet to talk about my music besides forcing it into conversation with my friends! Hope you’re doing well!
Kieran: How’s your 2024 been treating you so far?
Francis: It’s been a great year so far. I played my first Fonvery show in NYC, opened up for A Story Told, and had the chance to play at Grape Room before they closed. It was an iconic Philly venue and I’m happy I got to be a part of that legacy.
Kieran: You recently shared your latest single ‘Did You Want Me To Love You?’. Can you talk us through this track and what it means to you?
Francis: This track embodies the happy nervous energy I get when meeting someone I really like. I feel like I turn into Michael Cera on first dates and become extremely polite. Too polite if possible. It’s hard to look cool when you’re falling hard for someone. As a 20-something straight man, I know little to nothing about women so I tend to overthink, too. The lyrics tell the story of me completely missing signals on a first date and being so aloof that I looked uninterested in her. By some grace of God, we’re still dating now! I thought the concept was the perfect blend of silly and honest, which in my opinion, is a key recipe for making a genuinely happy song.

Kieran: Can you walk us through your writing and recording process?
Francis: My songs either start as a drum loop in Logic or a voice memo recording of my guitar. This song started on the guitar. I actually had most of the structure and even the lyrics for the pre-chorus in the back of my mind for close to a year or two. It wasn’t until I met my girlfriend that I was finally able to write verses. Once I had the complete song, I recorded and mixed it in my bedroom.
Kieran: What are some key influences within this song and your sound in general?
Francis: You can definitely hear the Alex G and Alvvays influences on this song but believe it or not, I’ve been really inspired by video game soundtracks recently. I have this unexplainable need to put old glitchy synths on everything ever since I heard the Katamari Damacy soundtrack. The way the composer combined corny electronics with orchestra instruments fascinates me. I was basically an iPad kid with my DS Lite, so maybe that’s why I deeply associate corny keyboard presets with pure happiness? I feel like having those sounds gave the song some youthful energy.
Kieran: What three words would you use to describe your music?
Francis: Raw, Warbly, and Surfy.
Kieran: If you could collab with any artist who would it be and why?
Francis: Remi Wolf! Her approach to pop music is so fun and she dips into so many genres. She’s not afraid to get weird with it. Her musical choices are fun and messy and yet she somehow makes sense of it all.

Kieran: Lastly, what else can we expect from you in 2024?
Francis: Let’s just say that I have one more surprise for the Fanveries this year. Stay tuned, y’all.
