Rockers War Gods Of The Deep talk through their new single ‘Breaker Of Worlds, meanings behind their music, and more
Coming cascading out of Chicago is the music project War Gods Of The Deep, a cacophonous sound that boasts elements from stoner rock, classic rock, and heavy metal, creating a large, all encompassing sound that is driven forward by huge riffs. The latest single ‘Breaker Of Worlds’ is a shining example of their sound, bringing forward a intricate web of rock that comes down like the hammer of Thor.
We chatted to the man behind the moniker Rikk about this musical project about what it means to him, his narrative behind the music, and more.
Kieran: Hey Rikk, thanks for chatting with us today! How have you been?ย
Rikk: Thank you for taking time out to connect. I am well. Itโs summer time here in Chicago so the weather is โinterestingโ yet agreeable most of the time lately.ย
Kieran: How’s your 2024 been treating you so far?ย
Rikk: Itโs been a great year thus far for WGOTD. Lotโs to be excited about, including the second pressing / re release of our debut album ‘Action Space Battle’ from 2019 as well as the brand new single ‘Breaker of Worlds’.ย
Kieran: So, let’s start at the beginning, how did you first get into music and what artists have influenced your journey?ย
Rikk: Letโs not do that at all as itโs not that unique of a story and certainly not intriguing enough for someone to spend their precious time reading. Like many people, I have been involved in music my entire life and continue to be inspired and fascinated by it. I can say that the biggest musical influences in my world are KISS, Queen, Van Halen, Def Leppard, Metallica followed by Journey, The Eagles, Dio, Iron Maiden and Neil Diamond.ย
Kieran: At what point did you know/feel ready to start releasing music into the wide world?ย
Rikk: Iโve need making records for both myself and others my entire adult life, so that is many, many years now, The entire time, Iโve always found that being ready is seldom necessary for most creative endeavours in life, itโs better to just jump into it and figure it out as you need to / go along. So I donโt know that I have really ever been or cared to be โready: I sort of just jump in and make the best of it. I find this approach keeps things inspiring as well as engaging.
Kieran: You recently shared your single ‘Breaker Of Worlds’, can you talk us through this track and what it means to you?ย
Rikk: All good music is a vehicle for the listener to impose their momentary needs onto. Good songs allow people to transcend the songโs implied orthodoxy and create their own experience – an experience that could be very different with every new listen. Itโs all up to the person listening to the song. ‘Breaker of Worlds’ is another entry into that process, something for people to enjoy and lose themselves in as they see fit.ย

Kieran: Your music has a clear story narrative that feels deep in fantasy lore. I am curious how you go about writing your music?ย
Rikk: Thatโs an interesting perspective. The music I create has no specific agenda, so itโs nice to hear how you are receiving and interpreting it. Very cool. Again, the job of the artist is to simply create the art. Who likes it, what is liked about it and how others react to or perceive it is completely out of the artistsโ control. Everyone experiences art, in this case music, differently. My writing process, although unique to me, is more than likely very similar to all those that write music as well as all of those that have gone before us.ย
Kieran: What does your recording process look like?ย
Rikk: An unmitigated blur of technical, mechanical and emotional cacophony tempered by peaceful intermissions of clarity and spiritual enlightenment, all of which is fueled by black coffee, cigars and profanity.
Kieran: Lastly, what else do you have planned for in 2024?
Rikk: Planning for the future is a foolโs errand. Here in the land of WGOTD, I just focus on moving day by day and doing what is deemed best for the creative process and all it has to offer. WGOTD exists to make music and entertain, so if I had to guess, there will be a lot more of those two(2) things to come in 2024 and beyond.
