Canadian four piece Kiwi Jr. have today released their new album ‘Cooler Returns’. With touches of The Knack, โHere Comes the Sunโ-era Beatles mixed with the pop sensibilities of The Thrills, Kiwi Jr.‘ sound is all upbeat pop and summer vibes.
While on the face of it Kiwi Jr. are straight indie folk pop, thereโs plenty on ‘Cooler Returns’ to keep things interesting. Whether itโs the playful lyrics (the chorus of title track ‘Cooler Returns’ deserves special mention) or the subtle twists and turns that the structure of each song takes, there is enough on this record to keep you interested and warrant repeat listens.
With each song brings a new catchy chorus that will have you tapping your toes and willing summer along. The thumping chorus of ‘Only Here For A Haircut’ brings a smile to your face while the upbeat pop of title track ‘Cooler Returns’ would make even the most hardy soul want to get up and dance. Youโd be hard pushed to find a song on the album that doesnโt make you want to smile or dance in fact.
Given the current doubt over festivals going ahead, there are far too many albums coming out recently that have got me wishing for a good summer and Kiwi Jr. are leading that charge in all of their jangly indie folk pop glory.
