Lucy Feliz and support brought joy and light to the Prince Albert, Brighton
Lucy Feliz floated onto the stage of the Prince Albert on Thursday night accompanied by her band and I was there to witness her in all her glory. But I’m getting ahead of myself.
The first thing that hits you walking into Prince Albert is life. Noise of joyful conversation, full beer glasses clinking, laughter ect ect. The interior of the venue downstairs is what my sister described as a perfect venue for a ‘cafe in Amsterdam.’ With it’s quirky walk decorations and mish-mash of seating arrangements. Upstairs is another story, behind a big (and frankly too heavy) door is a place where magic lives. Bathed in pink and blue light stands Lando Manning, giving to the audience his genuine low-key and beautiful tunes with utter sincerity.
When Lando’s time regrettably comes to an end, it’s ‘boogy time’ as Hutch put it to me. They had control of the DJ decks for a sweet 15 minutes between each set, playing classics and new psych bangers; Hutch got us through the waiting time. Next up was a band I’ve always heard (because a couple of members used to go to my school.) It’s Winter Gardens! Their dreamy vocals pairs with the energies of the rest of the band- they describe themselves as ‘dream-punk’– really made their set stand out. Vocalist Ananda Howard picks you up and sends you into space with her haunting, dreamy lyricism.
Finally Lucy Feliz took to the stage with her star spangled band. Playing personal favourites ‘Cowgirl’ and ‘Last Laugh’ along with the rest of her dreamy discography. She harbours the talent of effortlessly engaging a full room and does it with such gentility and softness. Lucy Feliz has quickly become a favourite of mine after seeing her and her band at the second Triptych night hosted at The Hope and Ruin back in January. If you get the opportunity to catch Lucy Feliz don’t hesitate to do so, she is one of the most calmest presences I’ve had the pleasure of being in the company of. For fans of Weyes Blood, Alice Phoebe Lou and Julia Jacklin.
