L.A based duo Lonely Richard talk to us about their friendship of 20+ years, AmazonBasics gifts, and more
A musical project or band has multiple ways of being created. It can be two minds coming together to push musical boundaries, a relationship turned musical partnership, OR it’s just simply two good friends coming together to make sweet, sweet music together. The latter is the story of Lonely Richard, the L.A based band formed by two best friends Will and Alex.
They recently dropped their lo-fi indie track ‘Tide Pools’, a track that is filled the brim with slacker vibes. It’s a song for the summer and one that has turned us into instant fans. So, we thought, let’s get to know these two chaps from America. We recently caught up with them to chat their new music, AmazonBasics gifts, and more.
Kieran: Hey! Great to chat with you today! How have you been?
LR: A genuine pleasure. Weโve been good, weโve been haunted. Throwing songs at a brick wall and seeing what sticks.ย
Kieran: How’s life been treating you so far this year?ย
LR: Up and down. Left of center, but hey weโre trying. Music rules.ย
Kieran: So, Lonely Richard is a project birthed out of a 20+ year friendship but how did you meet and at what point did you start creating music together?ย
LR: We met on the playground in NYC. We bonded over David Bowie and Lord of the Rings. And, in fourth grade we took our first guitar lesson together with an IT guy named Pete.ย
Kieran: Did you share similar influences or did you both have different tastes?
LR: We were just talking about this the other day. Our tastes are unusually aligned. I think I like Can a lot more than Alex.ย
Kieran: How have your influences helped shape your sound and aesthetic today?ย
LR: First and foremost, weโre huge fans. While we listen to a wide array of shit, our parents’ records (Dylan, Radiohead, Massive Attack, George Harrison) and indie from the โ90s and early 2000โs seems to be the most influential in what we make. Also, Mobb Deep.ย
Kieran: You recently shared your latest single ‘Tide Pools, can you talk to us about this release and what it means to you?ย
LR: Lonely Richard has a lot of feelings. We poured said feelings into Tide Pools. Butโ like, in reality, itโs about Willโs girlfriend (Alex is singleโฆ hit his line).
Listen to ‘Tide Pools’ here:
Kieran: Can you walk us through your writing and recording process?ย
LR: My girlfriend was making fun of me for always getting her AmazonBasics appliances as gifts, so I wrote her a deeply felt song. And gifted it to her alongside a milk frother.ย
We recorded it at Alexโs studio in Burbank. His brother, Archer, co-produced it and played drums and glockenspiel on the track. Weโre really psyched about how it came out.ย
Kieran: Lastly, what else can we expect from you in 2024?
LR: An e-book deal with Amazon. Just kidding. More records, more shows. Come see us in LA!ย
