The lovable goofball Mac Demarco returns with instrumental album ‘Five Easy Hot Dogs’, released via his own label

Mac Demarco returns to the masses in 2023 with his new album ‘Five Easy Hot Dogs’, an instrumental album available to stream from January 20th and available physically on May 12th, via Mac’s Record Label.

The album was crafted whilst Mac was on the road during a recent tour, as he explains: โ€œThe plan was to start driving north, and not go home to Los Angeles until I was done with a record.โ€ He continues, โ€œKind of like being on tour, except there werenโ€™t any shows, and Iโ€™d just be burning money.โ€

All of the songs on ‘Five Easy Hot Dogs’ were recorded and mixed in the corresponding city from each song title, and the tracklisting reflects the chronological order in which the songs were produced. Mac talks about this experience: โ€œSome places I stayed longer in than others, some of them I knew from the past, others not so much.ย  I tried to keep things busy all the time. If I didnโ€™t know what was up in a city, Iโ€™d just walk around โ€˜til someone recognized me and go from there. I met a lot of interesting people this way, and had a bunch of cool experiences.โ€

Mac has clearly tried to create something that feels like a journal, it’s almost gonzo music recording that takes influence from the likes of Hunter S Thompson’s approach to journalism, with maybe a little less narcotics.

Mac talks further: โ€œThe nature of ripping around and recording and traveling in this manner doesnโ€™t lend well to sitting around and planning or thinking about what it was that I was setting out to do. I didnโ€™t ever have a sound in mind, or a theme or anything, I would just start recording. Luckily the collection of recordings from this period all shake hands, they have a present musical identity as a whole. I was in it while I was in it, and this is what came out of it, just the way it was.โ€

Adding: โ€œThis record sounds like what rolling around like that feels like. I hope you enjoy.โ€
