Rising stars English Teacher release latest cut from their forthcoming debut EP ‘Polyawkward’
‘Mental Maths’ is the latest single from English Teacher and serves as a taster for debut EP ‘Polyawkward’ which is set for release on April 22nd through Nice Swan Records.
As the off kilter guitar plucks it’s haunting notes, vocalist Lily Fontaine sings “I prefer to go shopping in the evening, I would recommend it but then what would be the point” and with this witty line begins what Fontaine explains as an “expression of social anxiety and sensory overload through the catastrophising of a trip to the supermarket”.
‘Mental Maths’ swings through tempo changes that will keep you guessing as to what’s coming next. At the centre of it is the super tight drum work of Douglas Frost, the quirky and haunting guitar of Lewis Whiting all backed up by the solid bass of Nicholas Eden.
Part art rock, part post punk, English Teacher flick through styles with reckless abandon but it works perfectly. As the track reaches its end, the staccato guitar and rapid fire drums ramp things up before they effortlessly slink back in to the off kilter yet seemingly straightforward chorus like it was nothing. With airplay from BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music and KEXP plus support slots lined up for Yard Act and the welcome return of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, English Teacher are the next big band.
