Review | The Skinner Brothers – Soul Boy II

‘Soul Boy II’ is the latest album by Zac Skinner or as he’s better known, The Skinner Brothers. ‘Soul Boy II’ is thirteen songs of pure British filth. With a lyric delivery similar to Jamie T, Zac’s attitude and rock star credentials are clear on opener ‘Mountain High’. When he sings “jump from the pit to the stage that’s my hype” over the scuzzy guitars, it sounds like it’s coming from a man that walks the walk.

The Kasabian-like stomp of ‘Put Me Down As A Maybe’ barges in next with all the confidence in the world. The dirty guitars are still there over the huge electronic drums that threaten to beat a whole in your chest.

‘Low’ has the kind of rolling drums you would hear in a stomping 70’s glam call to arms but The Skinner Brothers are far from glam. With minimal lyrics, Zac let’s the guitars do the talking for the most part with vocals sinking deep in to the background.

‘1000 Reasons Why’ and ‘Told You So’ are straight summer bangers that you can already picture a crowd having the time of their lives to. It’s not hard to see why The Skinner Brothers have got the support of Radio X and BBC Radio 6.

With a sound that can only be British working class indie scuzz, The Skinner Brothers are steadily growing an army of fans and it’s only a matter of time before they’re main stage certainties at festivals up and down the country.
