Review | Vigilantes – The Neighbourhood

‘The Neighbourhood’ is the new EP by Vigilantes, and as the haunting opening gives way to pounding drums that drive the verse, you can feel the storm brewing.

When the chorus hits for that opening title track, the vocals unleash and the drums stomp a hole in your chest. With a sound that is reminiscent of Nothing But Thieves, this is raw and honest rock played with meaning and purpose. ‘Better Man’ chimes in with chorus drenched guitar sounding like an 80’s pop belter. When the rest of the band kick in, it’s that arena sized Springsteen style rock that just oozes good feelings. ‘Secret’ slinks over to the sleazy side of things with a garage indie rock stomping good time that swaggers along with confidence coming from every pore and a call and response chorus that’s begging to be shouted back by a sweaty crowd.

Vigilantes turn up the volume for ‘Drawing Auras’ which barges its way out of the speakers with whirring guitars, battered drums and a bass sound that you can feel in your belly. Rounding out the EP is ‘Tigerwall’ which sees Vigilantes bring it full circle back to that straight rock sound with a gorgeous chorus that elevates the whole song and cements Vigilantes credibility as a solid rock act. As well as the production being nigh on perfect, the songwriting on display gives you a glimpse of Vigilantes’ scope as artists and abilities as performers. Despite being so early in their career, Vigilantes already have a sound that could fill an arena.
