Art-Rock quintet Squid drop new single ‘Crispy Skin’ alongside news of highly anticipated third album ‘Cowards’
Squid have announced their third album, ‘Cowards,’ set to be released on 7th February via Warp Records. With their exhilarating debut ‘Bright Green Field’ and the more measured and twisted ‘O Monolith,’ Squid have consistently remained one of the UK’s most exciting bands, both on stage and in the studio.
Now, with their new album ‘Cowards,’ their sound is transforming yet again, with Marta Salogni and Grace Banks taking on production and long-time collaborator Dan Carey on additional production too. The album seems to be heading further into the void, far from the bright green field, with ‘Cowards’ being described as ‘about evil’. Squid promise “nine stories whose protagonists reckon with cults, charisma and apathy”.
Lead single ‘Crispy Skin’ is deliciously sinister, taking the best aspects of ‘O Monolith’ while straying even further from safe ground. The track is inspired by a dystopian novel about cannibalism and the blurred moral boundaries that crisis force us to confront. Judge’s vocals have rarely sounded so sinister as his signature yelps are joined by rumbles and whimpers.
Instrumentally, the track is glitchy, twitchy and fascinating. Plucky synths and grumbling bass is joined by the very prominent keys, a refreshing addition to Squid’s sound. As we’ve come to expect, ‘Crispy Skin’ is multi-phased, with an absolutely gorgeous guitar interlude; interweaving lines melancholically blend as the soundscape is slowly built around them. The keys provide a brightness to the mix above the muddy trenches below.
Yet again, Squid are pushing their sound forward, while maintaining just what keeps them so special. Judge’s vocals are characteristically entrancing and the band’s mazes of sound and influence are becoming more and more difficult to navigate; let yourself get sucked in.
