London’s Boy Ferguson talks us through his debut single ‘Grown Man’, life in London, and more

London based artist Boy Ferguson is just starting out on his journey but is already making a statement with his debut single ‘Grown Man’. It’s an indie-pop gem that has strong throwback elements to the 80’s sound og Peter Gabriel, with layered vocals and inventive synths.

We wanted to find out more about this fledgling artist and what inspires him to make music.. and MORE!

Kieran: How’s your summer going so far?ย

Oliver: Iโ€™ve broken some ribs, went to a honky tonk and have become a barbecue LEGEND, so pretty darn good.

Kieran: How’s London been treating you?ย

Oliver: London has been treating me with a lot of bad haircuts. Apart from that I enjoy it here.ย

Kieran: What’s one misconception people have about artists based in London?ย

Oliver: That we are hard and made of stone. But we are soft and squidgy.

Kieran: So, let’s start at the beginning, how did you get into music and when did you feel ready to start releasing it into the world?ย

Oliver: My mum is a singer songwriter from California. She got me into guitar and influenced me with American folk and some country-ness. Itโ€™s been a big break since my previous project which kind of broke me a little. I think since then I have been on a long journey discovering what kind of artist Boy Ferguson is. So feeling ready for my second project was a big step. I spent a long time working on my voice, playing and production skills before this point.ย

Kieran: Are there any artists or people who continue to influence you?ย

Oliver: Marty Atkinson, a family friend who was the finest player and songwriter I ever knew! He showed me what fine musicianship looks like. Of course I will forever be influenced by Lowell George with his sexy voice and slide guitar.ย

Kieran: You recently dropped your new single ‘Grown Man’, can you talk us through this and what the song means to you?ย

Oliver: This was a demo a few years back that I revisited and reproduced. It seemed to be the right song to kick things off. So it being the first song I have released for many years it means a lot to me.ย

Listen to ‘Grown’ here:

Kieran: Did you have any message or story you wanted to convey to listeners?ย

Oliver: I often visualise myself at the end of my life feeling like I missed the entire thing. The song kind of tells that story. Being trapped in a self fulfilling cycle chasing something but the act of chasing it squanders everything.ย

Kieran: Lastly, what else can we expect from you in 2024?ย

Oliver: I am going to release a few more singles in the next few months. A sweet single train coming your way baby! Also Iโ€™m finding a band right now. So fingers crossed I get some live shows going before the year ends.
