Indie-pop star Clairo announces her new album, ‘Charm,’ out on 12th July, and drops new single ‘Sexy To Someone’
It has been 3 years since ‘Sling,’ the second album from Clairo. The album saw her stride even further from her bedroom-pop origins, instead experimenting with folk instrumentation and gorgeously warm production on her best project to date.
Now, today, Clairo is back with news of her third album. ‘Charm’ is out on 12th July and promises to be another tonal change, taking inspiration from 70s jazz, psychedelic folk and soul. It has been described as an “extroverted bounce back” from her previous album.
Accompanying the announcement is lead single ‘Sexy To Someone,’ a track which effortlessly combines the poppiness of early Clairo with the warm cosiness of ‘Sling’. With production from Leon Michels and a strictly analogue recording process, this is hardly surprising.
Propelled by a groovy lo-fi drum beat, the hushed vocals are given priority, while the spare instrumentation is never overbearing and always necessary. Piano flourishes shimmer occasionally while woodwind instruments poke their head in too. The songwriting is catchy and cute, romantic and yearning, while never taking itself too seriously.
The sound is so warm and inviting, poppy but tasteful, and the 70s inspiration works extremely effectively. The arrangement is lush and satisfying, with just enough playfulness to keep you hooked. If the rest of ‘Charm’ sounds this good, we are in for a treat.
