Essence Martins turns the bad into beautiful with ‘Red Velvet’, a track born out of intense heartbreak.
Essence Martins has a talent of turning the bad into the beautiful. Martins‘ recent single, ‘Red Velvet’, showcases this talent, transforming her “first intense heartbreak” into three minutes of ethereal vocals and folky guitars.
‘Red Velvet‘ follows the aftermath of a breakup and how Martins began to steadily feel more disconnected from her lover, commenting that “it’s the classic lovers-to-strangers story”.
The chorus dwells on the dramatic difference between being so intertwined to not speaking at all – ‘I know what you taste like / But not what you want / I was your favourite / But now I’m no one’. The delivery of these confessional and emotional lyrics is dreamlike, accompanied by hauntingly beautiful harmonies.
‘Red Velvet’ is another successful offering from Essence Martins, using her worst experiences to create impactful and infectious indie-pop tunes.
