Pip Blom and Personal Trainer’s Willem Smit create Dutch indie group Long Fling release debut track ‘Flung‘
Long Fling, the slow-burning project of Pip Blom and Willem Smit, threatens to reshape the Dutch indie landscape. A decade of loose sessions and quiet exchanges has coalesced into their upcoming debut album, set to arrive on October 3rd, 2025. Whilst we wait, their debut single ‘Flung‘ serves as a fractured preview: angular guitars, fat synths, and taut pop vocals. Willem describes it as โone of the easiest songs on the record to writeโ….
‘Flung‘ opens with dissonant guitars before swelling wide at the edges with oscillating synths laid over a gauze of DIY rhythm. Willemโs vocals are the first to cut through – pop-infused and melodic. Thereโs tension – sonic contradiction – but somehow each word falls perfectly into place. His voice splinters briefly, a fleeting rupture, a novel flash of humanity.
The track sits squarely at the intersection of Blom and Smit, it’s a krautrock-laced anthem set with indie-pop proclivity; a motorik pulse with melodic instinct. โWhen we each asked our dads whether the album sounded more like a Willem album or a Pip album, they both said the otherโs name. I really feel like we made this album together – itโs a true blend of the both of us,โ Pip commented.
The track folds into dissonance only to rebuild toward a climax where synths modulate in stereo and Pip and Willemโs vocals phase in and out, casting a vocal interference pattern. Itโs here that the production is most tactile: โI think we both felt comfortable doing [the mixing] this time because we were in it together, and we were okay with the idea that the record didnโt need to be super polished or perfect.โย
The projectโs announcement lands alongside news of their debut UK/EU tour, with appearances at End of the Road, Come As You Are festival and a headline show at The Lexington, marking the first time Blom and Smit will bring their shared vision to the stage. Flings donโt often last, but this one has held together just long enough to make something beautiful, and the full project promises to be worth the wait.ย
