‘New Muscles’, the latest track from Mary In The Junkyard, is deceptively grungy and industrial, with new album ‘Role Model Hermit’ coming July 3rd.

Mary In The Junkyard say that ‘New Muscles‘ was written after drummer David Addison joined a gym and the track does have a certain industrial quality to it.

New Muscles‘ has been in the band’s live set rotation since 2025 and begins with a set of ceramic-sounding hits, where the collective percussion chinks and parries off one another. The main vocal hook of the track is a series of angelic and oscillating ‘Do doooos‘ that feed into ‘New Muscles” overall stripped back feel and is ripe for some wavey hand movements.

Clari Freeman- Taylor’s vocals are a constant whisper; the voice in the back of the gym-goer’s head. “I’m a creature of instinct. I could take you down with one finger.” What really brings this track together are the low, muted bass chords and the strings with their grungy and steampunky undertones. Through these instruments, there are echoes of the accordion that the track was originally composed on.

The video for this track was filmed in South-East London with both Freeman-Taylor and bassist, Saya Barbagila, learing Muay Thai for the shoot.

Mary In The Junkyard‘s debut album ‘Role Model Hermit‘ is out July 3rd.
