Georgia is a writer from Melbourne, Australia currently on an (indefinite) gap year in Bristol. Georgia is a big fan of all things post-rock and punk-adjacent.
StandToOrder’s debut single, ‘The Passage, The Fool, The Dance’ is a timeless, yet avante-garde take on post-rock.
The song begins with a guitar riff stirring under spoken word poetry, vocals fighting against the grain of the swelling chaos of instruments. The refrain “death is beautiful, death is an opening” ties each stanza together, with each mention of nature and its terrible beauty brought back to its impermanence.
Midway through the track, the vocals cease, and the bass line slunks into an instrumental reprieve, churning with each beat, leading back into the thick mess of sound. Building and bubbling with the froth of tension, the thrashing stumbles at the re-entrance of the spoken poetry, this time joined by opera vocals, fluttering piano, and echoing screamo – delivering the promise of genre-defiance. The track rides this line, coalescing into conclusion, ‘this is all I’ve ever known, beautiful, open’, evoking the sense that this is a song from the end of the world (a beautiful, wretched world).
This track is from StandToOrder’s upcoming debut EP ‘Gloaming’. Recorded and mastered in Bristol, it is set to release soon, and marks their awaited return to live performance.
