I’m a journalist from the North East currently exiled in Leeds. You can find me playing bass in the band ‘Hardware’ and having pints at the brude. Ha’way the Lads.

Cambridge six piece Ugly return with their powerhouse new single ‘Gallowine’ ahead of the release of their debut album ‘The South Façade’ in 2026.

Gallowine’ is a tour-de-force of progressive rock recalling King Crimson’s ‘In The Court of The Crimson King’ and The Mars Volta. An elaborate yet catchy piano riff dominates the song, with the band’s characteristic choral textures providing a sense of mystery. The chaotic nature of the song and post-rock guitars have made this a firm favourite for Ugly to play live. The vocals woven with nonsensical phrases gives the sense Ugly are referring an old myth you’ve never heard of and may never have existed.

Ugly themselves emphasise the more hallucinatory elements of the track, saying: “it features a lot of what make the band it is. It’s hard to say exactly what the track is about but it provides the air of the fantastical – switching from modes of heroic jubilation and chaotic descension.”

No live dates are currently in place, with the band busy adding the final touches to their first album, but keep an eye out for announcements for an album tour next year.
