Whitney release quasi-retro single ‘Darling‘ ahead of summer North American Tour

Since their formation in 2015, Chicagoโ€™s Whitney โ€” a two piece formed of former Smith Westerns guitarist, Max Kakacek, and Unknown Mortal Orchestraโ€™s drummer, Julien Ehrlich โ€” have made a name for themselves as merchants of soulful, quasi-retro sounds.

Their latest single, โ€˜Darlingโ€™, which tracks a break-up through two starkly separate sections, doesnโ€™t fail to deliver their trademark warmth, but also showcases newfound sonic experimentation. Half-way through โ€˜Darlingโ€™, following an intermission in the form of some hanging and discordant strings, we are dispensed into a tight but meandering instrumental; a structural move atypical of the kind of song that โ€˜Darlingโ€™s first half lulls us into believing it will be.

The first release since their 2023 album, โ€˜Sparkโ€™, this latest single marks the beginning of an incoming flurry of activity from the band โ€” one which fans of not-quite-slacker indie (think Andy Shauf, Fruit Bats, Kevin Morby) should be sure not to miss.
