Whitney release quasi-retro single ‘Darling‘ ahead of summer North American Tour
Since their formation in 2015, Chicagoโs Whitney โ a two piece formed of former Smith Westerns guitarist, Max Kakacek, and Unknown Mortal Orchestraโs drummer, Julien Ehrlich โ have made a name for themselves as merchants of soulful, quasi-retro sounds.
Their latest single, โDarlingโ, which tracks a break-up through two starkly separate sections, doesnโt fail to deliver their trademark warmth, but also showcases newfound sonic experimentation. Half-way through โDarlingโ, following an intermission in the form of some hanging and discordant strings, we are dispensed into a tight but meandering instrumental; a structural move atypical of the kind of song that โDarlingโs first half lulls us into believing it will be.
The first release since their 2023 album, โSparkโ, this latest single marks the beginning of an incoming flurry of activity from the band โ one which fans of not-quite-slacker indie (think Andy Shauf, Fruit Bats, Kevin Morby) should be sure not to miss.
