We chat to Malcolm Jones about his new life in Cornwall, playing with Grace Jones, and more
Malcolm Joseph moved to Cornwall around 20 years ago and immediately fell in love. Since then, he’s called this place home and has worked with some of the biggest names in music, including being the official bass player for Grace Jones. He recently formed his own band called Malcolm Joseph and the Unquiet Peace, formed of nine Cornish musicians. This year will see him and his music makers play their first show at Boardmasters Festival. So, with this in mind, we chatted with Malcolm to find out more!
Kieran: Firstly, thank you so much for taking to the time to chat with us! How have you been?ย
Malcolm: All good thanks!
Kieran: Originally you were from Hackney but now reside in Cornwall, what made you move down here?ย
Malcolm: I met my ex-partner who is Cornish is from Penzance. We used to come down at least 3 times a year when we had our first child around 39 years ago. Fell in love with the place even then, but She was a Londoner now and didnโt want to come back here at the time, I came back nearly 20 years ago and stayed and did a lot of commuting up the music line.
Kieran: Has being in Cornwall affected you as a musician?ย
Malcolm: No! I have been fortunate and met a wonderful set of musicians here in Cornwall, I also have been involved with various youth music projects and Toured widely around the globe.
Kieran: Does anything about the county inspire your music writing/creating process?ย
Malcolm: It’s a wonderful place to ease your creativity out, the views, the walks, the Ocean. Yes, it is an inspiring place to be.
Kieran: You recently formed your new band Malcolm Joseph and The Unquiet Peace, which is made up of Cornish artists, how did you all meet?ย
Malcolm: We all met through recommendations as well as myself putting out a shout to Musicians online who reside in the county who are up for the project.
Kieran: What can we expect from your debut Boardmasters show?ย
Malcolm: A 9-piece band with an eclectic range of Funk and Soul with all original material from my latest album called Ground, all played by this incredible band!
Kieran: Lastly, you’ve had a very illustrious career that has seen you be the official bass player for Grace Jones for well over a decade, be in your own band 7th Heaven, topped charts, and played with some of the world’s largest names, so my question is, what has been the highlight?ย
Malcolm: I think the other biggest highlight of my career apart from playing for the incredible Grace Jones, was being involved with forming a band and being the Musical Director for Massive Attack back in 1991 just as their debut album Blue Lines was released.
