Much to fans’ excitement, indie giants Hippo Campus announced both their new EP and lead track ‘Kick in the Teeth’
When it comes to walking the tightrope between genres, Hippo Campus are perhaps the music industryโs experts. With inspirations reaching from the depths of country ballads to the surface of psychedelic pop, the band donโt shy away from experimentation.
‘Kick in the Teeth’ is hot off the press and perfectly demonstrates this flair for genre fluidity.ย The track begins and we embrace a gentle acoustic guitar.ย Lead vocalist Jake Luppen’s voice harbours the melody of a ballad whilst lyrics โMy neighbour Tommy bought a six packโ offers the theme of reckless adolescents – a firm resident of the pop genre.
The verse slips into a flawless country harmony as we reach the chorus. Opening lyrics โso when you go home could you think about me?โ capture that lovesick sensation we have all hosted at one point or another, transforming the single to a raw ode you cannot help but relate to. It’s literally impossible not to be singing along by the second bridge.
If ‘Kick in the Teeth’ is anything to go by, โWastelandโ promises great things.
New EP ‘Wasteland’ is out on April 14th via Grand Jury.
