Indie-pop favourites Japanese Breakfast announce fourth album ‘For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women)‘ and drop new single ‘Orlando In Love’
Following their fantastic 2021 third album ‘Jubilee’ and front-woman Michelle Zauner’s bestselling memoir ‘Crying In H Mart,’ today Japanese Breakfast have announced their fourth album ‘For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women)’, out on 21st March via Dead Oceans.
Their first album fully recorded in a studio, ‘Melancholy Brunettes’ is produced by Blake Mills (Bob Dylan, Fiona Apple) and promises to ‘pull back’ from the bubbly extroversion of the last record. Expect moodier, darker tracks – more mature and contemplative while still romantic as ever.
Lead single ‘Orlando In Love’ is a gorgeous but reserved and stripped-back tune, telling the tale of a poet, whose epic is cut short by his falling victim to a siren’s call. Playing on Orlando Innamorato, the unfinished epic, Zauner draws on literature and culture while never getting bogged down by too dense a concept.
The track is airy and warm, with quietly strummed guitars, violins and minimal percussion allowing Zauner’s effortless vocals all the space they need to tell their story. It is a short track and one that we hope will come further to life in the context of the full record, one of our most anticipated for the year.
