Holiday Ghosts explore the emotional toll of lost identity through retro garage-pop in their new track ‘Sublime Disconnect’
With leading track ‘Sublime Disconnect’ out now, Holiday Ghosts announce their fifth LP ‘Coat of Arms’, set to release March 29th via FatCat Records, alongside a UK tour throughout April following a debut trip to SXSW.
Following the successful release of last year’s record ‘Absolute Reality’, Holiday Ghosts’ newest work covers a myriad of themes that the group have continued to perfect over the years. The powerful mix of garage rock and indie pop clash to present the personal emotion and protest felt by lead co-vocalist and drummer Katja Rackin, who explains that after the Iranian revolution in the 80s, her parents moved to Sweden, where she was born, and eventually moved to England when she was 8.
There’s a repetitive and staccato theme to the tune, making it sound somewhat erratic, broken near the end by a tonal shift from Katja’s “ba ba ba’s”, giving the track a seemingly uplifting ending. The music video especially adds to this fast-paced theme, with dynamic movements and shaky camera shots. The introduction is shot like behind-the-scenes footage, the camera quality being very reminiscent of a vintage/70s analog home video, which adds to the nostalgic feel that conveys Katja’s busy childhood.
Her somewhat emotionless expression paired with fragmented rhythm underlines the track with a fitting sense of panic. Lyrics like ‘the city’s in smoke and crumbles to dust’ and ‘does your future burn bright?’ emphasise the track’s and album’s political core, as Katja adds that its “a reference to privilege versus having to start from scratch, about the obliviousness that some people have towards the struggle of others”.
The style of both the song and its video is impactful, masterfully balancing a catchy tune with an important message.
