Bristol’s LICE drop complex and winding new single ‘Mown In Circles’ ahead of their new album ‘Third Time At The Beach’

With previous single ‘Red Fibres’, LICE set the bar extremely high for their upcoming album ‘Third Time At The Beach’. The album, set to be a 3-part epic dabbling in minimalism, rock, techno and more, is out on 20th September via AD 93.

And now, with new single ‘Mown In Circles’, we can start to see the full scale of the upcoming project. At only 2 and a half minutes long, ‘Mown In Circles’ is very different from ‘Red Fibres’ while still clearly existing in the same world.

The track is an off-kilter and unsettling mix of odd time signatures and edgy instrumentation; pianos jab you unexpectedly while vocals and guitars combine for synchronised swerves and dodges, never ending up remotely where you expect them to. The vocals are breathy and unnerving, exploring ‘language and misinformation’.

In the mid section, pianos arpeggiate into a natural climax before the band completely cut out and begin again, this time with different riffs and a different feel. The pianos are brighter and more optimistic for a moment before the sinister build up creeps in yet again. Guitar distortion wails in the background while glitchy effects put you even more on edge.

For a track to tread so much ground in such a short amount of time is seriously impressive; when considering the sonic differences between their two singles, LICE’s full album is shaping up to be just as ambitious as they claim.
