Experimental pop duo Water From Your Eyes announce new EP, ‘MP3 Player 1‘, out this Friday, and drop Chumbawamba cover

Water From Your Eyes are a strange beast. Their sound varies from sweet indie pop to experimental collaborations with Mandy, Indiana and The Dare. And, as of this week, they are now dipping their toes into cover band territory.

With ‘MP3 Player 1’, out very soon on Friday 12th July, Water From Your Eyes take several big strides away from their contemporaries in a very fittingly bizarre direction. The EP is set to feature covers from Adele, Al Green and even Third Eye Blind, in a wonderfully messy mix of genres and sounds.

The first taste of this mix is their cover of Chumbawamba’s ‘The Good Ship Lifestyle’. Their version features a tinny twisted breakbeat, with the vocals fully embracing the absurdity of Chumbawamba’s original. As the track jumps into its theatrical explosion, distorted guitars flood in while the drums open right up into straight-up rock, before returning to their tight breakbeat.

The real magic of this cover comes in the final section, when the band break into huge huge guitar solos, much heavier and even more epic than the original. This is such an odd choice to include on a covers EP, especially considering how funny it is not to do ‘Tubthumping’ instead.

But, as you listen to how much fun they’re having, with a big grin on your face, it really does somehow make a lot of sense for Water From Your Eyes. Now we’re just curious what on earth they’re going to do with Adele.
