Polly Money talks about how being a part of The 1975 has influenced her solo project, life in Cornwall, and more

Polly Money spent the last 18+ months touring with The 1975 as their fifth member, playing guitar. However, Polly also has her own solo project and is now gearing up to release her new EP ‘T Shirt Nothing Else’, out March 20th via Cool Online). Polly is also from Cornwall and fellow Kernow residents we wanted to chat to her about life on the road with one the world’s largest bands, how this has affected her solo project, and of course, her Cornish roots.

Kieran: Hey Polly, thank you so much for taking time to chat with us today! How have you been?

Polly: Iโ€™ve been doing pretty good thanks. I love the lead up to Christmas so Iโ€™m feeling very festive.

Kieran: How’s the last 18 months been? I Imagine it has been a bit of a whirlwind playing as the 5th member of The 1975 AND releasing your own music?

Polly: Yes it truly has been a whirlwind. Touring with the 1975 took me to venues and places that I could of only dreamed of and I loved every minute. I was writing whilst I was on tour so Itโ€™s been so great getting back and starting to release that music and focus on my project.

Kieran: Speaking of, you recently announced your new ‘T-Shirt Nothing Else’ EP, what can we expect from this release?

Polly: The EP for me is like an introduction to the next stage of my music. Itโ€™s not a million miles away from what Iโ€™ve done before but thereโ€™s definitely a progression. I feel like there’s a song for every mood on the EP and itโ€™s definitely a soundbite of a particular time my life.

Listen to ‘i’m not proud’ here:

Kieran: Can you talk us through the new release and what it means to you?

Polly: It came together pretty seamlessly and until placing the songs next to each other I hadnโ€™t realised they actually all connect and create a storyline. These songs mean so much to me as they were pretty much written around the world in different hotel rooms by sending ideas back and forth to one of my producers/co writers Connor. It felt really exciting writing in a new way for me without a real destination or any pressure. So when we chose these songs for the EP, it felt special and I canโ€™t wait for other people to hear this collection of songs.

Kieran: What was the writing and recording process like for this release?

Polly: So as I said above I wrote most of these songs on the road. I work with a couple of amazing producers, Chloe Kraemer and Connor James. So between the three of us there was lots of sending back and forth. I guess with these songs it was mostly done remotely, with a few days in the studio scattered here and there.

Kieran: Are there any artists that have inspired and influenced you?

Polly: Oh yea Iโ€™ve got loads of inspirations at the moment. Iโ€™m loving Beabadoobeeโ€™s new record, ML Buch has been played a lot recently and Iโ€™m really getting into The Sundays and Cocteau Twins.

Kieran: Has touring and playing with The 1975 influenced your sound at all?

Polly: For sure, I think it would be incredibly hard not to be influenced by their sound especially playing it every night. I learnt a lot on that tour and their music has been very inspiring for me.

Kieran: We heard you’re also from Cornwall (Geddon) and we’re curious to know if Kernow has influenced you as a creative?

Polly: We love Cornwall!!! It certainly inspired me in the early days. I was a beachy singer songwriter girly from the start, you should see some of my first press shots (thatโ€™s a Cornish gal right there). Itโ€™s a wildly creative part of the world. There is so much beauty and space down in Cornwall that has 100% influenced me.

Kieran: What is a common misconception about Cornwall?

Polly: This is a super obvious one but that everyone knows how to surf. If only I was that cool.

Kieran: What is one thing you wish more people knew about Cornwall?

Polly: Itโ€™s actually kinda cool more people donโ€™t know about this place but one of my favourite places in the world is this little fishing village called Mousehole. At Christmas time they have this big light show around the harbour and my family and I go every year, itโ€™s pretty magical.

Kieran: Lastly, what else can we expect from you in 2025?

Polly: More music and more shows.
