Foals return with a fun third single, ‘Looking High‘, ahead of their new album, ‘Life Is Yours‘, and repress of their debut, both released on 17th June.
Foals don’t show any sign of slowing down. They achieved a great response from their recent singles, have a new album on the way, are re-releasing their debut ‘Antidote‘ on vinyl and have a huge UK tour coming up with several festival spots.
While not breaking huge new ground for the band, this new single is fun and summery. At this point in their career, you’re going to know if you like Foals or not.
Philippakis’ falsetto vocals carry the track and sound dreamy over the lively instrumental. The instrumentals in the verse have a disco feel, with the jangly drums reminding you of LCD Soundsystem at some points.
The choruses are more ethereal, with the vocals laden with reverb and the guitar playfully supporting. The bass is heavier and all of these elements combine to create a warm dream-poppy glow. The track closes with lively synths jumping all over the place.
The lyrics are riddled with nostalgia and summer memories: “Looking high, looking low, for where all our friends used to go.” It doesn’t particularly matter that the lyrics don’t mean too much as it is easy to drift away with the easy-going pace and feel.
This easy-going-ness is explained by Yannis’s feelings on the track, calling it a “looking back to a more hedonistic time in my life, and a more innocent time in society in general, pre-pandemic and before the existential threat of climate change.”
