Pizza Crunch have revealed this will be their last single for a while as they begin work on a more expansive project
Alternative-rock outfit Pizza Crunch have made a promising start to 2022 with the release of their latest single, ‘Flatfoot’, a song previously only heard live at venues such as King Tuts and Rotterdam’s Left of the Dial festival.
The band have already headlined the renowned Club Sabbath in Glasgow before releasing singles ‘Fraud’, ‘Twelve Month Seasonal Depression’, ‘Celexa’, ‘Fried Intellectuals’, ’Coma-Inducing Gibberish’ and ‘Motivational Substances’. The group have also enjoyed airplay and support from the likes of BBC Introducing, BBC Radio 6 and Amazing Radio.
‘Flatfoot’ was produced, mixed and mastered by Chris Marshall (Baby Strange, Gerry Cinnamon and Declan Welsh and the Decadent West) at Castle of Doom Studios in Glasgow. “We actually went in to record a different song”, lyricist Ewan Hearns explains, “But Marshall had heard us do that one live and insisted we recorded that one. After a bit of back and forth we agreed to do it”.
The release marks the conclusion of their past sound: “Flatfoot arose during lockdown but has undergone many changes since then,’ Hearns comments, “I think the more jovial tone in the Flatfoot lyrics reflects this time of my life, some of our recent releases have a little bit of a dark undertone to them whereas this one deals with more superficial issues.”
It’s a tight, guitar driven song with an intricate riff leading us right in to visceral lyrical content. The rhythm guitar is used to equal effect, a counter-weight in a thrashing rhythm section that demands attention. The chorus is bolstered by sharp personal commentary, a kind of impenetrable nonchalance and roguish charm that keeps Pizza Crunch on the brighter side of melancholic alt-rock.
