Big Thief announce new album ‘Double Infinity,’ out on 5th September, and drop new single ‘Incomprehensible’

Today, indie folk legends Big Thief have announced news of their sixth studio album ‘Double Infinity,’ which will be released on 5th September via 4AD.

The album, by the now 3-piece band, was recorded in New York’s Power Station last winter. The band describe “riding bicycles on frozen streets between Brooklyn and Manhattan,” before meeting in the cosy studio.

Alongside Lenker, Meek and Krivchenia are a community of musicians (Alena Spanger, Caleb Michel, Hannah Cohen, Jon Nellen, Joshua Crumbly, June McDoom, Laraaji, Mikel Patrick Avery, Mikey Buishas), who helped the trio write, improvise and record over a series of 9-hour days.

Alongside the announcement is new single ‘Incomprehensible,’ already a firm fan favourite at recent Big Thief gigs. The track is beautiful, with honest lyrics about aging and the joy of letting changes happen to us as we go through life: “Let gravity be my sculptor, let the wind do my hair, let me dance in front of people without a care”.

Yet, where this could have easily become an acoustic ballad on an Adrianne Lenker solo album, Big Thief shake their sound up yet again, with lovely muddy production and a psychedelic sound. A heavier drum beat drives the track, while guitars warp, layered with effects, in and out of the mix. It adds such interesting texture to the track, while not distracting from Lenker’s subtle vocal performance.

New album ‘Double Infinity’ is out on 5th September via 4AD.
