Night Swimming’s new single ‘Second Place’ soundscapes the liminal space between migrations

The latest single from Somersetโ€™s own Night Swimming follows on from a string of releases drip-fed throughout the start of 2025. Offering vocalist Meg Jonesโ€™ signature falsettos atop the fivesomeโ€™s floating instrumentals, itโ€™s a track that at once compliments their sound profile and justifies the bandโ€™s many sold-out shows.

Titled โ€˜Second Placeโ€™, the new track finds a muse in the linear space between migrations, where one is forced to move on in blind faith of a new start. Above an atmospheric symphony, sombre lyrics arise from the get-go, juxtaposing the singleโ€™s steady drum-beat and feathery vocals, which respectively sound peace amongst grief.

Furthering the bandโ€™s cherished soundboard in its 5-minute duration – which engendered the success of their debut single in 2022 and garnered comparisons to the likes of Portishead and Massive Attack โ€˜Second Placeโ€™ is palatably introspective. As ever, laced with dream pop riffs and building serenity.

Audibly, Night Swimmingโ€™s latest recording echoes the quiet confidence of a band content in their soundscape; one theyโ€™ve proudly nurtured. Pleasing their fanship with another wispy anthem, itโ€™s a song to be swayed to during their UK tour this autumn, with shows nearing as soon as September and October.

The new track โ€˜Second Placeโ€™ is out now via Wipe Out Music.
