Canadian alt-pop quartet, The Beaches, release pop ballad ‘Lesbian of the year’ ahead of their new album ‘No hard Feelings’ out on August 29th via AWAL

Staying true to their evocative but catchy tunes, The Beaches blaze into their new era leaving listeners in a state of awe and coveting for kinship in a pop induced reverie.

‘Lesbian Of The Year is an alt-pop single that seems anthemic in its subject matter yet warm and tender in its harmony and instrumentation. Opening with tasteful textures, repeating synths and an established back beat, the song echoes with bands and artists such as The Japanese house, Del Water Gap and Hippo Campus.

The song follows Leandra Earls’ experiences with coming to terms with her sexuality later on in life and how her fans coined her as the ‘Lesbian Of The Year. The song is shining light on the pressure she felt, and still feels, to live up to the title and not feeling as if she can be her fans ‘gold star’. Like songs about grief, sadness and the navigation of life, ‘Lesbian Of The Year‘ expertly encompasses all three through the lens of accepting and coming to terms with your sexuality.

Lyrics like ‘wish I knew my younger self, wish I could give her help’ and ‘Mum thinks I will find a man … she will never understand’ create the tone of the song – a yearning to be understood, to give in to desire and to not feel shame in self-acceptance. Earl is heavy under this pressure and is sending her experience out into the ether, not necessarily for people to listen or to answer, but more so for the very catharsis of letting it all out and, in her own words, to let listeners know that “everyone is on their own timeline”

If this is The Beaches‘ new era I am here for it! I urge you to sit back, sink into the warm melancholia and bask in the probing and expressive lyrics. A thought-provoking opener to an exciting new era.

The Beaches‘ latest album ‘No Hard Feelings‘ is out August 29th.
