Turnstile dazzle and shimmer with their rendition of The Stone Roses’, ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ on Triple J.
‘I Wanna Be Adored‘ is a song that needs no introduction. It’s also a song that means so much to so many and so when a track like this is covered, it can be a tricky proposition for bands to tread the fine line between paying homage to the original, whilst adding in their own touch of originality. Turnstile, however, show us how it is done, whilst also honouring The Stone Roses, via triple J for their Like A Version.
Turnstile shine with their rendition, keeping the instrumentation relatively the same as the original record. The late Mani’s bass line that is routed in us all, anchors throughout, whilst Brendan Yates‘s vocals echo that of Ian brown, but carom and move with his own signature Turnstile flare – belting to the heavens whilst expertly keeping on melody and reverberating throughout the whole mix, washing and submerging listener.
The drums are tight and expertly mixed by the triple J team (as always). They sit and smack you at all the right points and the toms build so effortlessly with the perfectly distorted guitars, that this cover of a classic revives a song that, admittedly, didn’t need reviving, but nonetheless feels fresh and engaging in 2026.
This cover by Turnstile makes me think the industry needs more expertly talented musicians covering classics more regularly. I mean, think of Birdy’s cover of Bon Iver’s ‘Skinny Love‘, Adele’s cover of Bob Dylan‘s ‘Make You Feel My Love’, or Bon Iver‘s cover of Bonnie Raitt‘s ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me’.
I love the idea of greats paying homage to greats, the cyclical nature of it warms me and keeps me inspired that music will always regenerate, by being shown in new lights, by new faces, whilst keeping it’s meaning. Covers, in my opinion, if done right (like this one) reveal the magic and power of music.
