Oh you lucky one, two weeks in one! Definitely not due to anyone being at fault. Or not having enough time to write a piece because they were having too much fun last weekend. No. Anyway, you’re lucky. Two weeks. In one.
From last week we have the first single ever from Trip Westerns and the second single from Katy J Pearson’s album. And this week we have Tik-Tok sensations Caity Baser and Maisie Peters, and videos from Clunk sweethearts Holiday Ghosts and Personal Trainer. And my ear worm for this week is… (drumroll please) a surprise.

The debut single of Brighton cowboys Trip Westerns is exactly what you’d expect. A funky, perfect wild-west-esq banger! ‘Free Mind’ is a song that if you’d picked up one of your parent’s records from the 70’s and it started playing, you probably wouldn’t bat an eyelid. If you feel like being transported to a time of galloping across the desert of western North America but you can’t afford flights or a time machine, just put on this track and you’ll be there.

Katy J Pearson’s latest offering is ‘Game of Cards’ and it is the second single on the road to her second album ‘The Sound of Morning‘ which is out on July 3rd. A song that made me actually, vocally, excitedly say “ooooooh” when I first put it on. It’s like if the song ‘Pocketful Of Sunshine’ and Fleetwood Mac had a baby. I’m finding it difficult to not to say every single one of these songs are perfect. But they just are! Not to mention, the visuals of this campaign so far are just absolutely gorgeous. Katy J and band have definitely levelled up for record two, certainly no second album dive for them.

A danceable totally perfect breakup tune, Caity Baser returns with an altered (angry) version of her recent release ‘Friendly Sex’. What originally started as wanting to be more than friends with your sneaky link has been re-written into what it feels like when you find out your sneaky link is also seeing other people and not telling you. This song makes me want to slap every man I see in a 10 metre radius so beware of listening to it in public. I can’t put into words how amazing I think this song is. Just listen to it, you’ll get it.

I have personally been obsessed with Maisie Peters since she released ‘Stay Young’ in 2019 and she’s just released her newest fan-favourite single ‘Cate’s Brother’ that she teased on tik tok a couple of months ago while she was on her US tour. Fans (me included) became obsessed with the snippet and how chaotic it was. Seeing as Cate and her brother are both real people, who hadn’t heard the song. The song itself feels like it belongs in the golden age of girl pop anthems next to Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream‘ and Taylor Swift’s ‘Speak Now‘. ‘Cate’s Brother’ (and Maisie) will get stuck in your head and your heart forever so listen at your own risk.
Our Amsterdam sweethearts Personal Trainer have also released a new single this week titled ‘Rug Busters’. Another clever, catchy and well (enter my buzz word for this week) perfect track. It comes in a lovely little package along with other recent singles ‘Milk’ and ‘Key of Ego’. and as an extra treat they’ve also brought out a choreographed music video which you can watch here:
Holiday Ghosts have returned! After their third record, their latest release is titled ‘Credit Note’ and in normal HG style, it has heart-dampening lyrics but it makes ya want to get up and boogie! It’s fast paced, high pitched and an incredible return for the band. Watch the video here:
Willow’s Ear Worm
This week’s ear worm is a song that is not quite new, but it is new to me. It is the heart wrenchingly relatable ‘Want Me’ by Baby Queen who I have recently discovered and become obsessed with. I am so very late to the Baby Queen party but I am so so very glad I finally made it. It has a similar vibe to Wolf Alice’s ‘Don’t Delete the Kisses’ but if you were in a club being bathed in colourful lights and having an amazing time. The ending repeating line is “because you want me and you just know it yet” which I personally think is amazing on so many levels. It tells so many stories, if you were looking back on that time in your life before you started dating someone and they wanted you but they didn’t know it then. Or the opposite, the opportunities for someone to want you are endless, it can be taken any way. Just incredible.
